Tillerson: Assad has no role in Syria’s future

U.S. Secretary of state and UN special envoy on Syria, discussed the ways of settlement of the Syrian crisis

U.S. Secretary of state Rex Tillerson said that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his family “no role” in the future of the country.

“The United States wants Syria was intact and unified, without any role for Bashar al-Assad, said Tillerson, speaking to reporters in Geneva at the end of his week-long trip. – The reign of the Assad family comes to an end. The only question is how to make it work”.

Tillerson spoke to reporters after the “fruitful” discussions with the UN special envoy for Syria de Mistura Stefanom. As expected, in the coming weeks Mistura will resume passing UN-mediated talks on the background of the recent victories of Assad’s forces, fighting with the support of Russia.

Tillerson talks in Geneva were the latest stage of its international tour, in which he made a previously unannounced visits to Iraq and Afghanistan.
