Reality Check: Too few women in the film?

Allegations of sexual offences against Harvey Weinstein, the award-winning American film producer, have sparked a debate about who has the power in the film industry. Weinstein denies any sexual assault.

In an interview with the BBC’s Today programme, Daisy Lewis, actress and director, said they hope that the Weinstein scandal would prompt to write, a shift in the industry, so that more women reach leadership positions, “and directing and the creation of work and employment of other women, so that this situation does not really happen”.

Ms Lewis ‘ comments prompted Reality to dig Check, the figures behind the film-the most sought-after jobs.

The British film industry, which last year employed about 25,000 people, as cast and crew, is dominated by men, based on the research from the British Film Institute (BFI).

In 2016, less than a third of the producer credits in English films went to women, and even fewer credits went to writers (17%) and Directors (13%).

Under 10% of the stunt coordinators, music-composer, sound-Recording, and Directors of photography were female.

In just two main roles – casting Director and costume designer were employed, more women than men.

The proportion of women has increased over the years, with the percentage of the crew members rose from 3% in 1913 to 34% in 2017. But for decades the most influential contributions have gone mostly to men. It was not until 2010 that a woman, Kathryn Bigelow, won the prize of the Bafta for best Director.

Dr. Vicky Ball, senior lecturer in cinema and television history, De Montfort University in Leicester, said that, historically, some jobs, such as the technical work in the film industry, went to the men, and some, such as costume design, went to women.

“It’s always good to have a diversity of voices, otherwise their values are represented?”

Directors UK, which found in order your own study on the film industry in the year 2016, that women had to fight to the ladder. There was a perception in the film industry, women were less likely to hold managerial positions than their male colleagues, unless they worked in one area, such as make-up, the traditionally, as a role, especially of women.

Daisy Lewis also told the BBC that less parts made for the women on the screen, you vulnerable, because to speak up “does not mean that you get to be busy.” For all that decorated and revered British Actresses, Judi Dench, Kate Winslet, the industry as a whole shows that the proportion of women starring in films in the year 2017 is the same as it was in 1911 (around a third), which, according to the BFI data.

The top-grossing films in the United States in 2015, male characters are twice as much as female characters appeared on screen and spoke twice as often, based on research by the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media.
