Latvia supported the new law of Ukraine about education

The Minister of education and science of Latvia Karlis Sadurskis declared that “the steps of Ukraine to provide conditions for studying of the state language in the education system is clear”.

The Minister of education and science of Latvia Karlis Sadurskis called understand the actions of the Ukrainian language issue in the context of the new law on education, the press service of the Ministry of foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

The education act: time bomb

The Verkhovna Rada on Tuesday, 5 September, approved a new law on education. As stated by the Minister of education of Ukraine Liliya Hrynevych, the law implies that children of national minorities will study in their native language, in 5-9 grades, they will be administered items in the Ukrainian language of teaching, “and in high school, it can be almost all subjects in the Ukrainian language”. Such a scenario is provided for all national minorities, including for schools with only Russian language of teaching. The law came into force on Thursday, September 28.

“Steps of Ukraine to provide conditions for studying of the state language in the education system is clear,” said Sadurskis Riga during the meeting with the Minister of foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavel Klimkin.

The Latvian Minister for example, his country stressed the importance of creating the prerequisites for getting students knowledge of the state language. According to Sadurskis, it avoids discrimination in the labour market.

As reported, during the meeting, Klimkin briefed the Latvian Minister with the main provisions of the law of Ukraine “On education”. The parties also signed an intergovernmental agreement in the sphere of education, science, youth and sports.
