According to Viktor Medvedchuk, a part of the UN peacekeeping mission to ensure the OSCE’s special monitoring mission is a qualitatively new approach to a peaceful settlement of the conflict in the Donbass.
The leader of the movement “the Ukrainian choice — the right of the people” Viktor Medvedchuk believes that the introduction of the UN peacekeeping mission in the Donbas with the aim of ensuring the OSCE’s special monitoring mission will help achieve a lasting ceasefire and progress in the conflict settlement process.
Peacekeepers in the Donbas: you to be or not to be?
“I am firmly convinced that part of the UN peacekeeping mission to ensure the OSCE’s special monitoring mission (not just on the frontline but where today is the Supervisory function in accordance with the mandate of the OSCE and the Minsk agreements) is a qualitatively new approach to a peaceful settlement of the conflict in the Donbass. This will allow to obtain the result that we can not achieve more than two and a half years: a long-term cease-fire, maintaining a stable, permanent truce that will give the opportunity to move to a constructive dialogue and discuss ways to implement all the items (including the political part) of the “package of measures to implement the Minsk agreements”, — said Medvedchuk, whose words are given on the website of the movement on Monday.
We will remind, earlier Russian President Vladimir Putin said that he supports the idea of sending peacekeepers to Ukraine. However, according to him, speech can go only about the function of ensuring the safety of OSCE personnel, peacekeepers must be on the boundary line and no other areas. According to the Russian President, the decision of this question should take place after reconstitution of the parties, the withdrawal of heavy equipment and establishment of direct contact with representatives of the self-proclaimed DND and LNR.

The permanent representative of Ukraine to the United Nations Volodymyr Yelchenko, in turn, said that Ukraine, if necessary, to make its draft resolution on the peacekeepers in the Donbass, either side will work on the basis of the Russian draft, subject to adjustments to take account of the position of Kiev. According to him, Kyiv insists that the mandate of the mission should be broader and not touch the security of the SMM, the OSCE and the peacekeepers should be offered up to the border with Russia.
