The head of state on the occasion of the Jewish new year met in the Kremlin with chief Rabbi of Russia Berel Lazar and the head of the Federation of Jewish communities of Alexander Beard.

“It’s good that we have such a big country!” – said Vladimir Putin, welcoming the participants.

“Great,” replied Lazar.

In turn, V. Putin stressed that Russia is a multinational country, and such a holiday as New year is celebrated here several times.

“Great, very large, multinational, multi-confessional. We always have something to celebrate. Today we celebrate the New year for the Jews, the Jewish new year. I congratulate you – you and all the Jews of the country happy new year”, – said Vladimir Putin to Lazar and A. Beard.

“And from the 21st to 22nd – the Muslim new year. However, the prophet commanded the other holidays more to celebrate than the New year. Then we have the new year of the Christians. And Russia is still on the new and old style. And 16 February – the Buddhist new year. That is all year round there is something to celebrate,” – said the head of state.

The President noted that religious life in the country is developing dynamically, and thanked the Jewish leaders for good cooperation with the secular authorities.
