Sleeping with the Enemy star Patrick Bergin – the man who turned in a towel, straightening in a sign of the malevolent intention is to join EastEnders.
The Robin Hood actor will play Aidan Maguire, a prison friend of Phil Mitchell, who is described as a “charismatic old-school villain”.
The 66-year-old, will begin filming this month and will appear on the display towards the end of the year.
Bergin said he was “delighted” to join a soap that had “seen and admired.”
“It’s a show icon that has the ability to shape the way people think, in addition to having big explosive stories that keep the audience gripped.
“I’m really looking forward to seeing what they have in store for Aidan as it is meant to be dramatic.”
Bergin the story goes to see Aidan go up to Phil’s door after many years, rekindling their old friendship and his ability to get into trouble.
EastEnders’ creative director John Yorke said that it was “a great honor to have him on board”.
Said Bergin will be working closely with Phil (Steve McFadden) and Mick Carter (Danny Dyer) to “carry out a truly explosive story” about the Christmas and New Year.
“EastEnders deserves the best, and in Patrick we are absolutely privileged to be a truly great actor to join the show.”
Born in Dublin in 1951, Bergin from recent credits include heist movie that Still Steal the Old fashioned Way and the Irish TV series of Red Rock.
