Petro Poroshenko said that he had written a letter to the Ecumenical Patriarch to grant autocephaly to the Orthodox Church in Ukraine. The President of Ukraine said during the traditional address to Parliament, which was broadcast “112 Ukraine”.

“Let us hear and the leadership of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. I would like to draw the attention of His Holiness to a very great the seriousness of our intentions, the presence of the Ukrainian leadership a strong political will to solve the problem, which is on the agenda since 1991. Ukraine has the right to the local Church, we have the right to defend,” said the President.

“Nobody has the right to deprive Ukrainians of their own Church. Each citizen he chose, chooses and will choose the faith and the Church. Ukraine is separated from Church, but she cannot passively watch as other States, other public authorities use dependent state institutions to achieve their geopolitical goals,” the President added.

Earlier, at the Parliament held numerous rallies against the laws of the Church.

Bill No. 4511 proposed to allow authorities to influence the appointment of the leadership of religious organizations, and the bill No. 4128 want to simplify the procedure of changing the Charter of the religious community, allowing it to do the simple majority of votes.
