Kyrgyz Bishop criticized the mayor of Karakol for the removal of land from the local Church

Moscow. May 29. INTERFAX – Bishop of Bishkek and Kyrgyzstan Daniil urged the mayor of Karakol Daniyar Arpachiev to apologize in connection with the conflict around the local Church.

“Due to a misunderstanding of the laws, the mayor decided to illegally confiscate land belonging to the Church. The efforts of the legal service of the diocese and the Kyrgyz government agencies in the conflict have been exhausted. Not without the influence of our society. I hope that the mayor apologize to the people, because he has offended not only the Orthodox, but also Muslims of Karakol. After all, this temple is loved by all, respect for Holy sites,” the Bishop said Monday in an interview to “Interfax-Religion”.

He recalled that the Church in Karakol is one of the oldest in Kyrgyzstan, it houses the icon of the Mother of God, brought from mount Athos to 120 years ago.

“Confiscate the land around the Church that belongs directly to the parish in order to build there stores, is lawlessness. On the contrary, we should preserve this land. It is Holy for the Orthodox and cultural heritage of Kyrgyzstan”, – said the Hierarch.

These days Kyrgyzstan is visited by the Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Kirill, who, in particular, was consecrated resurrection Cathedral and the Foundation stone for the new building of the Vladimir school in the capital of Kyrgyzstan and met with President Almazbek Atambayev.
