Patriarch of Georgia has cancelled the celebration associated with the 40th anniversary of his enthronement

Tbilisi. May 25. INTERFAX – the Solemn events associated with the 40th anniversary of the enthronement of Catholicos-Patriarch of all Georgia Ilia II, is cancelled, the official website of the Georgian Patriarchate.

“Given the unstable situation in the world and existing in Georgia social situation, with the blessing of His Holiness Ilia II… cancelled anniversary celebrations associated with the 40th anniversary of the enthronement”, – reads the statement of the Patriarchate.

By the time of the ascension of Elijah II to the Patriarchal throne in Georgia, there were 15 dioceses and about 30 active churches. Today the country’s 47 dioceses and about 2 thousand existing churches, as well as about 3 thousand members of the clergy.

The Catholicos-Patriarch of all Georgia Ilia II (in the world – Irakli G. Gudushauri, shiolashvili) was born January 4, 1933 in Vladikavkaz, he studied at the Moscow theological Seminary and Academy. 23 December 1977, he was elected Primate of the Georgian Orthodox Church.
