Moscow. May 8. INTERFAX – the Coptic Patriarch Tawadros II awarded the prize of the International Fund of unity of Orthodox peoples. Alexy II.
The head of the Fund Valery Alekseev at a meeting with the representative of the Coptic Patriarch Bishop Uloom in Cairo conveyed Patriarch Kirill’s invitation to Tawadros II to participate in the awards ceremony, which will take place on 23 may in Moscow, the press service of the representation of the Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia to the Patriarch of Alexandria and all Africa.
Coptic Patriarch awarded the prize for outstanding activity on strengthening unity of Orthodox Christian Nations, strengthening and promoting Christian values in society.
Egypt is home to about 9 million Christians, mostly Copts. They have repeatedly been the victims of terrorist attacks. So, in December last year, a suicide bomber caused an explosion on the territory of the Coptic Cathedral of St. Mark in Cairo. Two more explosions occurred in April in the Church of St. George in the city of Tanta in the Cathedral of St. Mark in Alexandria. In June 2016 in the city of El-Arish shot a Coptic priest Raphael Musa. Responsibility for all these attacks took the terrorist group “Islamic state” (banned in Russia).
Overall, in the words of Tawadros II, 2013 Egypt’s Christians suffered 37 attacks – about one a month.
