Pope begins two-day visit to Egypt

Dubai. April 28. INTERFAX – Pope Francis Rmskoy starts Friday visit to Egypt, reports the associated press.

During the two-day visit, the Pontiff is expected to meet with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the Coptic Patriarch Tawadros II, the Supreme Imam of the University “al-Azhar” Ahmed al-Teyib.

According to the representative of the Holy see, the purpose of the trip is to call for peace and tolerance towards religious minorities.

The Agency notes that the visit will take place under heightened security in connection with the recent attacks in churches of the Egyptian cities of Tanta and Alexandria.

As reported, 27 of pilgrims who came to the Church of St. George in the city of Tanta on the feast of Palm Sunday April 9, was killed during the first explosion. Another 16 people were killed in the explosion in the Cathedral of St. Mark in Alexandria – among them one policeman prevented the suicide bomber to go to Church. The responsibility for the explosions was taken by the terrorist group “Islamic state” (banned in Russia).
