Moscow. March 31. INTERFAX – the Consecration of the place of the future construction of the chapel of St. George took place near the village of Novoselovo Vladimir region, at the place of death of Yuri Gagarin.
At the consecration, which was celebrated by the Dean of the temples of Kirzhachskiy district Archpriest Dimitry Ershov was also attended by pilots-cosmonauts twice heroes of the Soviet Union Alexei Leonov and Boris Volynov, the first woman-cosmonaut, hero of Soviet Union Valentina Tereshkova, Vice-Governor Alexander Lobanov, the Deputy of the state Duma Joseph Kobzon, the press service of the deanery.
“March 27, 1968 I was here at the airport and heard this tragic explosion that went all over the globe and came back the echo of sorrow and grief. We lost people, it happens in life. But our comrades died in the name of life, in the name of others – those who came after them and who have to go further”, – said Alexei Leonov at the ceremony.
The chapel will be built at the memorial to Yuri Gagarin and his flight instructor Vladimir Seregin, opened in 1975. The monument is a 16-meter high stele in the shape of an airplane wing made of red granite. On the front side are carved the portraits of Yuri Gagarin and Vladimir Seryogin.
The memorial also set the aircraft “MIG-15”, an exact copy of the one on which they made their last flight. Nearby is the Church of St. Andrew, built in 1825.
