Israel boycotted the meeting of the UNHRC

GENEVA, 20 Mar – RIA Novosti, Elizabeth Isakov. Israel boycotted the meeting of the UN Council on human rights in Geneva, which discussed the extension of the construction of Israeli settlements and the situation of human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, the correspondent of RIA Novosti.

On Monday during the 34th session of the UN Council on human rights discussed the situation in the Palestinian territories in the form of interactive dialogue with Michael Link, a special envoy on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967.

The link presented their report, which, in particular, stated that “illegal occupancy (occupied Palestinian territories – ed) dangerous progressed since the beginning of the year with the announcement of the construction of 6 thousand new homes and the simultaneous destruction of Palestinian homes in the West Bank, including in East Jerusalem.” According to the Rapporteur, adoption of the Israeli law that legalizes the confiscation of Palestinian land belonging to private individuals, confirms a dangerous trend which chose the leadership of Israel in the coming years. The destruction of the internal legal barriers to the continuation of the policy of settlements “further distancing Israel from compliance with international law,” said Linc. In addition, Israel’s blockade of the Gaza strip negatively affects the country’s compliance with human rights and “is a dark stain on the effectiveness of international law”.

In reply to the interested party, the representative of the state of Palestine said that if the occupation of Gaza continues, the situation in the area by 2020, is in danger of becoming “unstable and disastrous.”

Israel, as an interested party, did not respond, as the country’s representatives boycotted the session of the UN Council on human rights and was not present in the hall.

The UN Security Council on 23 December 2016, passed a resolution demanding an end to the Israeli settlement in the Palestinian territories. In response, Israel has reduced contributions to the UN budget at $ 6 million.

On 15 March the economic and social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) presented the report with the prosecution of the Israeli authorities in the creation of the “apartheid regime, which dominates the Palestinian people.” The presentation was carried out by the Executive Secretary of ESCWA Rima Khalaf in Beirut. The report was published on the Commission’s website. Two days later, Rima Khalaf resigned and left his post, and the report itself was removed from the organization’s website.
