Why don’t you have the preview of the Velar with a public demonstration of a concept car?

Since the success of the Evoque, we have a lot more control over our destiny. We have demonstrated that our master plan can work, and we are in a hurry to prove that point.”

When did you start working on the Velar?

The idea originated three years ago has changed very little since. If a car is right, you know it, and you just have to wait until the right time.”

McGovern, why Land Rover’s design will always be unique

Why is now the right time?

We are on a roll and this is the next step on our path of transformation. We make a transition from a specialist, the brand to a bigger brand, but this does not mean that we will ever be, a generalist. All we need to do a large design and engineering [in the core]. Our vehicles must be convincing. Velar has a glamour, modernity and elegance that has no equal.”

Anyone who buys the Velar?

It is a new kind of Range Rover for a new type of customer. The Evoque is put to us in a white room, the new one for us and our opponents. The Velar is the same maybe not in terms of size and price, but it is unique in other ways. We stretch our brand.”

The Velar is start another “lifestyle” -focused. Why haven’t you shown, a new Defender?

You can’t have a industry to run the centre for the traditionalists. We need the establishment of a viable industrial and financial-balance sheet, before we have a viable defender for the future. As soon as we earn money, we can afford to invest in a brand-new Defender family. We do not need to be supported by heritage. Our job should always be about the future and role in a changing world.”
