Why the Oscars need, to children’s performers

A little boy wearing a Tux, stole the show at last year’s Oscars. In the room, he’s a heart-wrenching performance as the child of a young woman who was kidnapped as a teenager, imprisoned for years in a shed. The little boy, the character had been born in captivity and prison, never have a life outside of the borders of this backyard. It was a performance of enormous depth of feeling from this young actor Jacob Tremblay, who was only nine years old when he ceremony of the Oscar.

His role actorly imagination. Childhood is all about discovery and firsts, but Tremblay’s character, when finally liberated, experienced all of them at once, after thought, was the scales of the whole world. To reflect the ability, what it means, childhood issues, while she is still a child an extraordinary thing. It requires a sensitive insight into a character, only the best actors possess.

But Jacob Tremblay was not nominated for his performance in space and its role in the Oscars ceremony, but much loved, was largely ornamental. He gave his co-star Brie Larsen a high-five, when her name was read out in the category of best actress; he told host Chris Rock, “I loved you in Madagascar!”; he craned his neck to get a better look, when the Star-Wars-droid BB-8, R2-D2 and C-3PO entered the stage. He was regarded for his cuteness instead of his talent. And he is exactly the reason why the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences needs to reinstitute the Academy Juvenile Award, with performers under the age of 18 years to be honored from 1935 to 1961.

Oscar nominations for any of the child actors in the current competitive categories are rare. This year, Sunny Pawar, the young artist, plays with a child from his parents separated in the film of the Lion, gives the Film much of its emotional punch. As a screenwriter Luke Davies accepted the Bafta Award for best adapted screenplay for the Lion, he called Pawar “a discovery for the ages” – and yet, as Tremblay, Pawar also overlooked for a nomination.

Hollywood needs to recognize that age is a prerequisite for a great performance

Even if children are nominated in the competitive Academy Awards, the categories, you win only rarely. The youngest best actor nine-year-old Jackie Cooper for Skippy was nominated, while the youngest winner Adrien Brody, at age 29 for The pianist. The youngest best actress for nine-year-old Quvenzhané Wallis for beasts of the Southern Wild was nominated, while the youngest winner was 21-year-old Marlee Matlin for children of a Lesser God.

The supporting actor category follows the same trend, with eight-year-old Justin Henry as the youngest candidate for his tears turn into Kramer vs Kramer, while Timothy Hutton, 20, was the youngest winner, for the Ordinary people. The supporting categories have a much greater allowance for child performers, but also nominated for the supporting actor 11-year-old Haley Joel Osment (The Sixth Sense), and 11-year-old Brandon De Wilde (Shane), the 16-year-old Jack Wild Oliver! and the 17-year-old Sal Mineo for Rebel Without a cause.

Best actress in a supporting role the three of us exceptions to the rule: a 10-year-old Tatum O’neil, the 11-year-old Anna Paquin, and 16-year-old Patty Duke, all of the collected Oscar statuettes, a further seven at the age of 15 years of age or under picking up nominations. The implication is clear: the Academy is more willing to recognize, the art of the child performers in a supportive capacity, suggesting that there is resistance to the idea, children with a movie. Hollywood needs to get to grips with the idea that age is would be a help not a prerequisite for a great performance, and bringing back the Academy Juvenile Award, affirm the idea of a child actor as an artist.

“Never work with animals or children”

From 1935 to 1961, have been afforded this honour, a seven-inch version of the 13.5 (34.29 cm) statuette, was presented to child actors such as Deanna Durbin, Mickey Rooney, Judy Garland, Margaret O’brien, Claude Jarman Jr, Bobby Driscoll, Hayley Mills and, of course, Shirley Temple. The perception of many people of the temple – , she was just a sweet child playing sweet children, in which adults might smile and say: ‘Awwww’ – may be forever tarnished the idea with the “child star’. But this is unfair, temple, who has a lot of shoes is more than just dance in wooden or Lollipop sing The Good ship. Her tap dance choreography with the legendary hoofer Bill Bojangles Robinson in The Little Colonel Eleanor Powell-caliber. She spent six months of Mandarin phrases to learn for her role in ” the Stowaway. And as an abductee in Heidi, the move really.

Outside of the United States, children have been a staple in renowned films from great auteurs

The idea that cuteness is for children, the greatest cinematic virtue is one that will not shake Hollywood still actually able to. Outside of the United States, children have been a staple in renowned films of auteurs like De Sica, Truffaut, Tarkovsky and Oshima, Malle, Bunuel, Bergman and Kiarostami – Jean-Pierre Leaud in Truffaut’s The 400 blows is not a definitive rebuke of the idea that child care providers can as cute. But WC Fields’ famous quote “Never work with animals or children” – that implies that either they are true professionals, or is in the background of their adult co-references-stars – has long been a driving mantra of the industry.

How many of the great Hollywood auteurs have built their films to beat at the end of child services? Of Hitchcock, Hawks, Huston, or the idea is almost unthinkable. John Ford is the greatest exception, by the construction of his 1941 best picture winner How Green was My valley, a 12-year-old Roddy McDowall, whose performance Was a masterly study of grief, refuted the idea that child actors can’t go deep. In the last few decades, Spielberg went on to build several films around children and children’s perspectives on the world. And also Woody Allen, that paragon of the adult wit and sophistication, created some of his most memorable moments on the screen about child actors in Annie Hall and Radio days.

The best of youth

Why, then, the Academy has the issue of the Juvenile Award, stop on the first place? There are several recurring arguments for the devaluation of the child actors’ performances. The idea is to not overcome of children, the self-consciousness and self-doubt, can be a hurdle for the adult actors, the fear of judgment. It is an argument that suggests that fear is an important part of a great power; a child actor experiences none of the fear of the criticism of the adults faces, therefore, there are no shares.

Natalie Wood’s mother tore the wings off a live butterfly to make, that she wept on the set

It is no coincidence that the last time the Juvenile Award was given was in 1961, in the moment, to swell the Academy’s series began, with the actors download the film the eagle and The method required. For many of these devotees, the challenge of the actions that you must overcome to inhabit a fully developed sense of self to someone else. This means that ‘staying in character” or other complex acting exercises. How could a child who is a method actor and staying in character after the Director cut calls?

Also look at how active the children are in need of ideas and can readily, therefore, as a “method” as adults, some of the child actors has a method-style preparation, though. Natalie Wood would prepare a mother, her daughter – without your daughter’s consent – for sad scenes in the refugee drama of Tomorrow Is for ever by the memory of that time, she saw her dog get hit by a car, and on one occasion, Wood’s biographer, Suzanne Finstad, recalls, and even took out a jar, a live butterfly and rip its wings in front of her. Seven-year-old Natalie was sobbing to the rear moved to the set, to roll with the camera ready.

The Academy has always had a penchant for eye-catching performances on the border on the hysterical. Perhaps, by contrast, there is a feeling that the children play only themselves. But then how do you account for nine-year-old Jackie Cooper howls famous meltdown in The Champ – primal and pulling hair, when he learns his father has died? And if you believe the opposite is true, that it’s hard for children to appreciate and not mug for the camera, you need to see The Black stallion, where 11-year-old Kelly Reno, a shipwrecked child alone on an island, the only with a horse companion delivers a performance so minimalistic he’d have a muse for Robert Bresson. Don’t think that children are the villains? Take a look at Douglas Silva, as the murderous pre-teen gangster, L ‘ Il Ze in city of God. But surely a child can’t play, but everything other than a child, right? Then you have not seen Haley Joel Osment to portray in ” AI: Artificial intelligence, a robot that plays the role of a child for a childless mother. The whole idea is a child actor detached comment on the nature of not only the childhood, but humanity itself.

Maybe irony is the biggest test of a child actor gifts. But you look like Macaulay Culkin, disappears in the role of Kevin McAllister in home Alone, while also being a self-aware dimension. In the movie, Culkin is in demand not only to play a child, but you play the embodiment of a universal human imagination, show the disadvantage, that the fantasy, when it is fulfilled. As he and possibly murderous snow-shoveling neighbor Roberts Blossom sitting together in a Church pew, and discuss their shared loneliness, we see a child experiencing the kind of depression about to be alone on Christmas day almost exclusively for adults.

The Academy Awards are determined by the campaigns that are mounted, and the narratives that are created by publicists and studio marketing to be the leaders as much as by anything else, and children, if able to its best, in General, are not able to deliver on this part of the Oscar process, whether it’s because of school or family obligations. This is another reason why so few child actors nominated in the competitive categories. But the Academy must bring back the Juvenile Award to these omissions.

To recognize a refusal, on the size of the child, the artists are, what child is really.
