KIEV, Nov 12 — RIA NewsI. Ex-Governor of Odessa region Mikhail Saakashvili is confident that Ukraine will not extradite him to Georgia, where he is under criminal investigation.
“No, I have a better opinion about the President (of Ukraine Petro) Poroshenko that he is capable of such things (to give Georgia – ed.). Imagine a hypothetical situation that he took and gave me. In a week I’ll be free in Georgia, because I have in Georgia, 600 of thousands of supporters,” — said Saakashvili on Saturday in an interview with Ukrainian “Fifth channel”.
Saakashvili on Monday announced the intention to resign from the post of Governor of the Odessa region in connection with the unwillingness of the Ukrainian authorities to fight corruption. He also accused Poroshenko in patronage of the criminal clans in the region. In the night of Thursday Poroshenko signed a decree about the dismissal of Saakashvili. On Friday, Saakashvili declared intention to seek early elections to the Verkhovna Rada and the plans to create in Ukraine his political power.
Saakashvili left Georgia immediately after the inauguration of the new President in 2013. Then the Prosecutor’s office of Georgia in absentia brought Saakashvili charges in several criminal cases, including the embezzlement of about $ 5 million of state funds for personal needs. Later the ex-President was announced in an internal investigation. According to the interior Minister of Georgia Giorgi mghebrishvili, Saakashvili will be arrested immediately after crossing the border of the country.
