Smartphone sales in Russia in 2016 rose to 18.6 million units

MOSCOW, 19 Jul — RIA Novosti/Prime. Smartphone sales in Russia in January-September 2016 increased by 6% compared to the same period last year, to 18.6 million units, the report suggests, one of the largest cellular retailers in Russia “the Euronetwork”.

In monetary terms, sales increased 30% to 223,3 billion. The average purchase price increased by 24% and amounted to 12 thousand rubles.

“Overall, based on the data, it can be argued that the smartphone market is starting to recover. Note that the smartphone market in the first five months of 2016 is already close to pre-crisis levels of the accounting year. The main factor that affects the dynamics of the market in 2016, began a campaign to lower prices, supported by the retailers at the beginning of April of the current year”, — the report says.

The largest increase over the same period showed smartphone models costing 20 to 30 thousand rubles. So, their share on the Russian market increased from 5% to 9% (sales growth was 87%). Smart phones of an average price segment (15-20 thousand rubles) increased its share by 1% and took 7% of the market, sales of these smartphones in January-September grew by 20% compared to the same period last year. The proportion of devices from 30 thousand rubles increased from 5% to 7% (sales up by 51%).

This trend experts attribute April’s drop in prices for premium smartphones and the fact that banks have changed their policies in relation to consumer lending, which allowed consumers less likely to save on the purchase of such smartphones.

Share gadgets cost from 5-10 thousand rubles and 10-15 thousand rubles on the Russian market of smartphones remained unchanged (33% and 13%, respectively). Cheaper smartphones continue reducing its presence in the market. Thus, the share of devices costing from 3-5 thousand rubles for the reporting period decreased from 22% to 19%, the share of devices with cost up to 3 thousand rubles — from 15% to 11%.
