Zhukov called the removal of the Russian Paralympians “biggest mistake”

The head of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) Alexander Zhukov called the removal of the Russian Paralympic team from the Paralympics 2016 in Rio de Janeiro’s biggest mistake of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), reports “RIA Novosti”.

“I already said that, in my opinion, exclusion from the Paralympic games — the act is unjust, inhumane. The decision was made under strong political pressure. Biggest mistake of the IPC,” said Zhukov told reporters.

He also noted that the removal of Russian Paralympians, it is important to participate in competitions which will pass in Moscow on September 7-8, although, according to the heads of the ROC, “they will not replace the Paralympics.”

On 7 August the head of the IPC Philip Craven declared the suspension of the Russian team from the Paralympics 2016 and the deprivation of the Russian Paralympic Committee (RCC) membership in the organization.

August 15, RCC filed an appeal to the court of arbitration for Sport (CAS), but the court rejected it on August 23. Thereafter, ASM appealed the CAS decision in the Swiss Federal Supreme court, but the court also dismissed the appeal.

On 25 August on awarding the members of the Olympic team of Russia in the Kremlin, President Vladimir Putin announced that suspended from the Paralympics athletes will be organized special competitions and the reward for victory in these competitions will be the same as would have been the end of the Paralympic games.”

On August 31 it became known that these competitions will be held in Moscow on September 7-8.
