Angela Merkel has proposed to increase spending on defense from external threats

German Chancellor Angela Merkel

Speaking at an economic conference in Berlin, Merkel said that the EU could not protect itself from external threats, and is forced to rely on assistance from the United States, reports Reuters. “I am sure that a country like Germany, which spends on defense 1.2% of GDP, and the United States, who spend 3.4% of GDP should move towards a unified performance”, — said the Chancellor.

While Merkel has indicated that she expects from other members of the EU that they will also bear the burden of defensive expenditure in the long term.

The German Chancellor did not specify which Berlin considers to be the main threat. However, on 5 June edition of Deutsche Welle published information that the new strategy Germany’s security policy towards Russia is considered as “the combination of containment and cooperation”. According to the authors of the text, Russia has gone from partner to rival the West.

The document, which leads to DW, also referred to crisis regions around the European continent.

Commenting on this publication, the press Secretary of Russian President Dmitry Peskov said that the transfer of Russia from the category of “partners” of Germany to the rank of “rivals” can cause feelings of regret and concern.

Later, the German Ambassador to Russia rüdiger von Fritsch reported that the national strategy has not yet been published, but because all the quotes there are speculation. “Let’s not pay attention to the propaganda and let’s take our beautiful projects, in particular youth exchanges,” he said.

In a press-service of the Ministry of defence of Germany did not comment on why the decision was made to publish a new document and whether it as a threat mentioned Russia.
