On the White house website appeared petition demanding the US attorney General to conduct a thorough investigation into payments to former Yukos chief Mikhail Khodorkovsky, President Barack Obama, Senator John McCain and Vice-President Joseph Biden.
The authors of the petition indicate that Obama, McCain and Biden were co-sponsors of the resolution No. 322, which was approved in the Senate in December 2005. In the resolution published on the website of the U.S. Congress, stating that the criminal justice system in Russia is treated unfairly Khodorkovsky and his former business partner Platon Lebedev. The document notes that the criminal cases against Khodorkovsky, Lebedev and their accomplices are “politically motivated.”
“We believe that the payments [made] in exchange for the adoption of the resolution, is one of the forms of political corruption,” wrote the authors of the petition. They also noted that the resolution has caused irreparable damage to U.S.-Russian relations.
