The official representative of Russian foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova in his Facebook said the words of former U.S. Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul, who yesterday in an interview with Polish newspaper “Postimees” urged the US to “restrain” Russia. Zakharov stressed that the basis of diplomacy “are intelligence and responsibility.”
She quoted McFaul’s statement that “the United States should, in accordance with the needs to curb Russia and meet her”, and “Russia’s actions allegedly prompted NATO to reflect coming from Moscow threat”. “At the same time McFaul noted that the approach of the Alliance towards Russia’s borders is a legal, because it is not heard about the U.S. promises not to expand NATO to the East,” wrote Zakharov. She remembered the answer Henry Kissinger on the question of whether to give the Western countries Russia promises not to expand NATO to the East. Kissinger, according to her, claimed that “there may have been informal comments, which were so understood by Russia.”
“I would not began to speak Russian, how exactly they conduct their foreign policy. But it would be one of the areas of mutual misunderstanding of the parties.” — quoted Zakharova Kissinger.
“I’m not suggesting you to choose who of the two American diplomats to believe. Because American diplomat here alone. After all, diplomacy is a profession, the basics of which are the intelligence and responsibility”, — concluded Zakharov.
Mike McFaul later responded to this review Zakharova in his Twitter. “So diplomatic,” wrote former U.S. Ambassador to Russia.
