The President of Russia Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister of Greece Alexis Tsipras
Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras at a press conference following the meeting with President of Russia Vladimir Putin has not responded directly to the question of journalists, how will Greece vote when considering the question of the extension of EU sanctions against Moscow in June, but were generally against the continuation of sanctions.
He said that the future of the European continent is unthinkable if the EU opposed to Russia. Greece, he said, could serve as a “bridge of cooperation and friendship”.
“Our role in all international organizations where we are members, is to contribute, in order to have smoothed sharp corners,” he assured Tsipras partner and journalists.
Answering the question of whether you discussed the issue of sanctions on its negotiations with Alexis Tsipras in Athens, Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed that “it is not our issue.”
“It’s not us sanctions are imposed. We retaliated, as soon as partners are ripe for a reversal, we will immediately make the same gesture and step,” — said Putin
Earlier, presidential aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters that despite the position of Greece as an opponent of sanctions, Russia will not make exceptions for any of the countries and to change their decision on the embargo.
Putin also stated that the EU sanctions and the Russian response has damaged the economic cooperation with Greece: turnover last year fell 36% to $2.8 billion.
Tsipras has repeatedly said that his government opposed sanctions against Moscow. However, they invariably extended by decision of all 28 EU countries.
Putin in the end of the press conference was supported by the Greek partner, whose efforts to establish a dialogue between Russia and the European Union have not yet been successful. “We understand the world in which we live and we do not expect committing deeds of Hercules, and it is unlikely Greece will be able to clean up the Augean stables of the European bureaucracy,” — said Putin, whose words aroused the audience’s laughter.
Moscow, as Putin said, hopes that Greece will be able to contribute and influence decisions in the EU, if together with neighbors to create uslovia for the implementation of major regional projects.
