Press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov commented on the statement of U.S. state Department, which has called for changes in the decision on recognition as extremist activity of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatars. According to him, this issue is “an internal affair of the Russian Federation”.
“This is an issue that concerns the Russian jurisdiction, and therefore, in this case, we do not believe it is possible and necessary to listen to the third countries”, — said Peskov on a question about whether Russia to consider US proposals for Majlis (quoted by TASS).
The U.S. state Department on Friday called on Russian authorities to change the decision by Majlis, with a corresponding statement was made by the official representative of state Department of the USA John Kirby. “The Majlis has long been the representative body of the historically oppressed Crimean Tatar population. He also served as a major voice in preserving the culture [of Crimean Tatars] and their protection from discrimination”, — said the Agency.
Kirby expressed the view that banning the organization would prevent the Crimean Tatars to Express an opinion in the media and hold public events. The state Department also found that the Russian authorities are not entitled to claim the Russian legislation “on the territory of another state”. In Moscow repeatedly declared the legality of the annexation of the Crimea in Russia in the referendum, the results of which do not recognize the majority of Western countries.
Earlier in the week the Ministry of justice of Russia has made the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people to the list of organizations suspended for extremist activity. This was done on the basis of the decision of the Prosecutor of the Crimea Natalia Polonskaya. She explained that this measure was to prevent “violations of Federal legislation”.
The decision of the Crimean Prosecutor criticized in Kiev. Ukraine’s foreign Ministry protested, saying that by banning Majlis, the Russian side violated international law and the Convention on the elimination of all forms of racial discrimination. The country’s President Petro Poroshenko has called the suspension of the activities of the Mejlis of the violation of basic rights and freedoms. “Is the restoration of the Stalinist policy concerning the indigenous population of Peninsula”, — said the head of state.
