In Russia will build a virtual testing ground for driverless cars

In Russia will create a virtual ground — a portal where the company can simulate all scenarios and conduct testing of unmanned aerial vehicles. This is stated in the message of one of the project developers, Russian software company Cognitive Technologies. The consortium of developers, in addition to the Cognitive Technologies, the universities include nust “MISIS” and Moscow Institute of physics and technology (MIPT) and the special economic zone “Innopolis”.

Virtual ground is a portal where developers model complex and critical traffic situations for unmanned vehicles, ranging from movements in bad weather conditions and ending with the accident, told RBC President Cognitive Technologies Olga Uskova. For example, the website will be used to develop scenarios of the behavior of the machine when to avoid casualties is impossible and artificial intelligence of the drone must make a decision, who of the road users will have to sacrifice.

Invest in the project “KAMA-Autorobot” — joint venture company Cognitive Technologies and KAMAZ, as well as car manufacturers from Japan and South Korea. Their names Uskova was not disclosed. Total volume of investments in the platform in two years will reach 150 million rbl., predicts the President of Cognitive Technologies. According to her, the company has already invested in the project is 30 million rubles.

For developers of unmanned vehicles on a virtual polygon cheaper to test and easier to remotely share the experience than to its “real” counterpart, explained Uskova. The individual elements of the virtual polygon are operational, and at full strength he must earn in two years, she added. An important element of the infrastructure of the landfill will be a special laboratory for modeling and analysis of traffic accident using both real videos and modeled in the “Innopolis”. The representative of “Innopolis” has not responded to a request to RBC at the time of publication of this post.

Investments in this project start at $100 thousand, said the head of RBC venture Fund Alpha Robotics Venture Vladimir White. Such systems are designed for decades, therefore it is possible to carry out tests and do not damage the expensive prototypes of drones, he said. According to White, virtual polygons already exist in the world. For example, in the USA there is a Virtual Ground Control Station to work in space and with gravity. Virtual polygons there are in many large companies — Volvo, Tesla and others, he added. Virtual testing ground for drones is in China — Dji Ground Station, in Russia there is a virtual ground CML Safety Suit, said White.

CML Safety Suit is based in St. Petersburg and specializes in the simulation of road situations for vehicles, it has developed several companies in the Engineering center Spbpu, LLC Laboratory “Computational mechanics” (revenue in 2014, according to “SPARK-Interfax”, — 88,6 mln.) and LLC “Polytech-Engineering” (revenue in 2014 — 63,7 mln.). Cognitive Technologies and KAMAZ for the last four years developing the project “KAMA-Autorobot” is a joint venture producing unmanned trucks. Cognitive Technologies develops software products for creating drones — artificial intelligence and KAMAZ is responsible for production, conducts tests and oversees the promotion and selling of trucks. The costs of development and production of unmanned Vehicles at the end of 2015 amounted to about 400 million rubles — the automaker has allocated 90 million rubles 300 million rubles invested in Russia.
