Russia’s permanent representative to the EU Vladimir Chizhov admitted the possibility of the resumption of the project “South stream”. This opinion he expressed to journalists, transfers “Interfax”.
“From an objective point of view, from the point of view of Europe’s demands for Russian gas, this prospect”, — said Chizhov.
A similar view was expressed by Chizhov at the end of January. He noted that the project may resurface “in the near future”. Chizhov explained that in the long term the EU’s need for gas “will only increase”. “Not only because the European economy out of the crisis. Importantly, the production of gas in the EU will be reduced quite vigorously. Depleted field in the North sea, the problems with other sources”, — said Chizhov.
Earlier, on 10 March, Deputy Minister of energy of Russia Yury sentjurin has declared that Bulgaria had to think about the resumption of negotiations on the project “South stream”. He also noted that now “there are active negotiations with the southern European States”.
From the construction of the “South stream”, which was supposed to link Russia and Bulgaria, the Russian Federation has officially refused on 1 December 2014. Since then, the media has repeatedly reported that both sides can return to the project. In particular, such data appeared in the Bulgarian media at the end of January.
After the failure of the project “South stream” Russia has announced that a highway of similar capacity will be built under the Black sea by the end of 2016, but the pipeline will not lead to Bulgaria, and in Turkey. However, the negotiations on this project were suspended after 24 November 2015 Turkish military aircraft shot down a Russian su-24 on the border with Syria.
In late February, Gazprom announced a new pipeline that will run under the Black sea. The Memorandum of understanding, involving the supply of gas to Greece and then into Italy, with the Russian company signed the Italian Edison SpA and DEPA SA, the Greek.
